unlocking migrants’ wisdom
vision
We envision the Netherlands as a vibrant exemplar of effective integration. Crossing Horizons is committed to decolonizing integration concepts and policies by fostering meaningful connections between diaspora artists, intellectuals, and the host society. As Arab literature and visual artists, we aim to contribute to the country’s integration policies.
We aim to address cultural estrangement and promote collaboration between expatriate Arab intellectuals and broader society.
We aim to decolonize integration policies led by newcomer literature, visual artists, and professionals from the Arabic-speaking world, from diverse fields. Their insights, stories, and recommendations are our foundation to refine and implement inclusive integration strategies.
By addressing integration deficits and fostering respect for diversity, we aim to enhance the effectiveness and inclusivity of integration initiatives.
In 2022, Crossing Horizons was born in Amsterdam, inspired by the journeys of newcomer Arab literature artists navigating the complex landscape of integration. We grew into a collective of professionals—writers, researchers, creative producers, and visual artists—based in the Netherlands. Some of us have personally experienced the integration process, while others are the third generation of migrants. Together, our stories reflect both resilience and a deep commitment to shaping a more inclusive cultural future.
From the beginning, our mission has been rooted in a belief that integration is not only a matter of policy or governmental responsibility—it is also a shared social commitment. Residents, neighbors, and local communities play a vital role in fostering belonging, curiosity, and mutual exchange. Crossing Horizons emerged to respond to this need: to bridge cultural divides, amplify the voices of Arab creatives, and create a space where cultural integration is lived and practiced collectively. Recognizing the often-overlooked cultural capital of Arab artists in the diaspora, we set out to build platforms that invite deeper participation, celebrate diversity, and encourage a sense of shared responsibility in shaping our plural societies.
Our initial steps focused on building connections with Arab literary voices, visual artists, and intellectuals in Amsterdam—sharing our stories, identifying needs, and creating spaces for meaningful exchange. We soon realized that many in our community experience a double isolation: separated from their countries of origin and often disconnected from the broader diaspora and host society. This dual estrangement made our mission all the more urgent and necessary.
In response, we launched a series of small initiatives designed to break down these barriers and foster connection. These included a Yemeni photo-and-story exhibition accompanied by a culinary journey through Yemeni cuisine, intimate literary evenings, collaborative events, and creative workshops. Each initiative became a bridge—showcasing the depth and richness of Arab cultural expression while inviting local residents to engage, listen, and participate. Through these encounters, we began to challenge the notion that integration is a one-way process, instead cultivating mutual understanding and shared cultural responsibility across communities.
Today, Crossing Horizons is committed to working collectively to decolonize integration policies and fostering genuine connections between diaspora intellectuals and the host countries.
As we look to the future, we remain dedicated to our vision of a world where cultural diversity is celebrated and integrated meaningfully into the fabric of society. Through our programs, events, and advocacy, we will continue to build a bridge between past experiences and present challenges, ensuring that the rich cultural heritage of the migrants from the Arabic-speaking world is appreciated and celebrated.
